Sailing Goat Restaurant

This Bayside spot transports you to a distant land

There is quite simply nothing like Sailing Goat Restaurant. With a great menu of coastal inspired cuisine, excellent wine and beer and live music on weekends, Sailing Goat Restaurant is the one-of-a-kind place you never knew you were looking for. Getting there is half the fun.

Improbably located at the end of a steep and winding road that rises above Richmond, the restaurant sits on Point San Pablo Harbor amongst a bohemian houseboat community and a how-in-the-hell-did-I-never-know-about-this-place vibe. Tucked between the East Brother Lighthouse and the Chevron Rod & Gun Club, Sailing Goat is like stumbling upon a Mississippi Delta pirate hideout that took a wrong turn and got lost at Burning Man.

Public art in the form of lizards, bumblebees, a gramophone and an iron-wrought tree adorn the grounds. Up the nearby hill is a pen of friendly, poison oak-eating goats (no petting) and a community of yurts. If it weren’t for the bay and boats, the place could be an off-the-grid enclave in the middle of the desert somewhere. It’s just a hop from the Richmond Bridge toll plaza and yet it feels like 15 minutes from nowhere. Once you arrive, you’re in good hands.

The destination restaurant is the work of Arnon Oren, owner, and executive chef Ross Kaplan. Arnon is a veteran of Chez Panisse and Oliveto, having begun his career in Lyon, France. Ross grew up outside Washington, D.C. enjoying Chesapeake Bay seafood. With a career that started at Danny Meyer's Union Square Cafe, he honed his technique at his own restaurant, Oakland's Bocanova. Together, the duo bring their fresh and local sensibility to this outpost of seafood specials in the form of harbor chowder, fish and chips, rock cod brandade, a constantly evolving internationally inspired seafood stew and classics like elevated mac and cheese, Little Gem Caesar salad and chocolate bread pudding for dessert.
