Sonoma Zipline Adventures
Elevating forest fun with education and real community impacts
Walking among towering redwood trees is a profound experience. Flying between them at 40 miles per hour above the forest floor elevates things in more ways than one! Sonoma Zipline Adventures is an ecotourism pioneer in the redwoods in Occidental, Calif. The longest of the seven zipline zips 250 feet above the forest floor for 1,500 feet. There are also two “sky bridges” and a rappelling course.
Don’t want to leave? Sonoma Zipline Adventures offers an overnight stay in one of several treehouses that includes zipline thrills, a guided hike and delicious breakfast and dinner delivered right to your tree-top nest.
The nonprofit company began in 2010 and has grown beyond an arboreal thrill ride into a leading education center for youth and at-risk communities. Situated on 127 beautiful acres of second-growth redwoods, Sonoma Zipline Adventures mixes outdoor fun with an appreciation for the sylvan environment and community service that includes a respect for the native Kashia and Miwok people who once used the land as a meeting place.
The adventure company welcomes thrillseekers looking for high-speed fun on the longest zipline in Northern California, but their mission is deeper than that. Sonoma Zipline Adventures is an educational site for foster children, refugees and other communities that benefit from the healing immersion in the redwoods. The property serves the community in other ways, too. During COVID-19, it provided beds for more than 50 unhoused people, a profound experience for all. When wildfires ravaged Sonoma County in 2017, the site served as a staging area for firefighters and provided them with hot meals.
For each zipline tour, $1 goes toward at-risk youth, locally and internationally. In Sonoma County, Sonoma Zipline Adventures partners with at-risk youth organizations to provide the tours for free or at a reduced price. Internationally, Sonoma Zipline Adventures contributes to a day camp experience program for poor, oppressed, orphaned, at-risk, and HIV/AIDS-impacted children in South Africa. These programs have impacted more than 10,000 kids since 2002, helping the children and their families rise out of poverty by teaching them skills and teamwork.
Sonoma Zipline Adventures continues to deepen its connection to the land and the community. It offers training and internships for Kashia and Miwok youth and is in the early stages of building an indigenous peoples’ cultural and nature center to ensure future generations continue to learn what nature and these great trees have to teach us.
