Camp Russian River

It's as same as it ever was at Guerneville's 130-year-old campground

When inland temperatures start edging toward triple digits, there are few places as cool and serene as the Russian River—if you know where to go. Camp Russian River is the place. The river is the sweet spot between the baking interior and the foggy coast. Located above the namesake river under cool redwood trees, the 130-year-old campground is an oasis.

Owners Kelly and Mikal live on-site and they make the place welcoming and relaxing for everyone. While the campground is located just across the river from busy Johnson Beach in central Guerneville, Camp Russian River remains a tranquil getaway.

Post-COVID, competition for camp sites has gotten intense. That’s what makes Camp Russian River feel like such a find. It’s affordable. It’s clean. It’s sweet. It has everything you need and nothing you don’t. To be sure, this isn’t glamping. If you want to do yoga you’re on your own. But the place is tidy and well cared for. Guests are grouped according to their needs with plenty of space between sites. Some sites stay empty to ensure everyone has enough elbow room.

“We hang our hat on uncrowded atmosphere,” says Kelly.

RVers have 30 amp electrical and water hook-ups and tent campers get cool patches of redwood duff and grass-covered ground. Showers and clean bathrooms are available, too. Tea lights give the place a fairy feel at night. Seventy five percent of guests are return visitors who know a good thing when they find it. Great restaurants and wineries are a short drive away as is the ocean and majestic Armstrong Woods State Natural Reserves, but chances are you won’t want to leave the park-like setting. The low rates (starting at $60) are attractive but mainly it’s the old-fashioned fun and good times that come from days and nights spent under the big trees by the river with friends and family.
